My older sister chose the historical U.S. Grant Hotel in beautiful downtown San Diego as her wedding location almost 9 years ago! It is a gorgeous hotel. If you are in San Diego, at the very least, drop in and have a cocktail at the bar. We had a great weekend there. I was so inspired by the guest rooms, I chose to make my own headboard. This was when we were living in our Highland Park bungalow.

So, six years ago when we moved into our current home I wanted the headboard in our guest bedroom. I’ve always wanted to make all the rooms feel like luxury hotel rooms. If you feel like you’re on vacation when you’re at home, then you won’t want to leave. That is my thought process anyway! When I set it up though, I put a black frame around the bed to match black nightstands that I already owned from the move. It wasn’t my first choice, but I wanted it all to coordinate. I also added some color with the shams and I hand watercolor painted the pink prints hanging on the wall.

BEFORE Guest Room Update

I recently posted a photo of this room on my Instagram along with a photo of the US Grants room to show my inspiration. It was then that I realized I wanted to make the room feel more like the hotel’s and maybe make it more sophisticated. It always helps to have guests coming to encourage a new project. My in-laws were scheduled to come out so I figured it was a great time! I felt like the black nightstands were making the room feel too tight. So, I immediately sold those on OfferUp! But before I officially committed, I decided to put painters tape on the wall to see if I wanted to go through with the project.

I liked the way this was looking, so…. let’s do it!

I measured exactly what I needed as far as linear square footage and then I made a trip to Lowe’s! They have a great trim selection. They really have grown their selection over the last few years. I decided to do a wider trim around the headboard and a trim I thought looked kind of art deco to be the side trim on the walls.

Right side trim up!

Naturally, with kids this project took me two weeks. I had to do this between naps, feedings, homeschooling, butt wiping, diaper changes, etc! But I got it done! I ordered my plug-in sconces from Anthropologie and my new nightstands from Target. I also bought the super cute faux leather benches at the end of the bed from Target! Obviously, the room isn’t exactly like the hotel, but I am really happy with how it turned out. I think this looks more sophisticated and flows more with the rest of the house. I really like each room to flow… coordinate. LOL. So, if you’re in town… you know where to stay!
